Dear Professor De Lisi,

	My name is Jonathan Berry, and I am a postdoctoral fellow working
at The Center for Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science
(DIMACS) on the Busch Campus.  I am currently working on a grant proposal
with the goal of adapting some software tools developed here for use in
the teaching of discrete mathematics.  The project consists of two 
main components: one to address K-12 issues, and one to address those in 
undergraduate education.  The K-12 effort is headed by Joseph Rosenstein,
Education Coordinator at DIMACS, the undergraduate effort is headed
by Mark Goldberg of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and I am the chief 
designer and developer of the system we intend to adapt.  We hope to 
collaborate with a researcher in cognition to ensure that the work is 
well-founded and sensitive to the needs of young students.  I have 
searched the RuCCS home pages and identified a few people who might
be interested,  and I spent some time at the center talking to graduate
students to determine more possibilities.  Your name came up as somebody
who might be interested or able to make further suggestions.  Please
contact me if you know anybody who is likely to be interested in 
participating in our work.
	Certain areas of discrete mathematics concern manipulation of
models which are easily visualized.  However, it can be very time 
consuming to draw enough interesting examples to reveal underlying
properties or patterns, and to understand processes operating on these
models.  The system that we propose to adapt for educational use will 
give students the the ability to generate, visualize, and manipulate 
examples which would be impossible to view using paper and pencil.
The system is interactive and allows students to use the results of
one set of experiments as the basis for further ones.
