The DNA Barcode Data Analysis Initiative (DBDAI):
Developing Tools for a New Generation of Biodiversity Data

The DAWG Steering Committee plans to provide travel support on a competitive basis to approximately 15 participants from European institutions and 20 participants from US institutions (contingent on the success of pending proposals to funding agencies). In addition, the Steering Committee may have funds to support the participation of a very few senior investigators. Priority will be given to those who plan to continue their work beyond the workshop.

ELIGIBILITY: Priority for travel support will be given to applicants who are either:

• enrolled in a doctoral degree program at a university in a country associated with the European Science Foundation (see list of Member Organizations at www.esf.org) or the U.S., or
• a post-doctoral fellow who has received his or her doctorate after 1 January 2003 and is currently working at a university or research institution in a country associated with the European Science Foundation or the U.S.

ALLOWABLE COSTS:

Recipients of travel support will receive some or all of the following: economy class return airfare from their home institution to Paris, hotel accommodations and meals during the workshop, and reimbursement for incidental expenses such as transportation to and from airports.

REVIEW CRITERIA AND PROCESS:

Applications for travel support must be submitted by June 2, 2006. The DAWG Steering Committee will review all requests for travel and the abstracts submitted by applicants and will inform all applicants of funding decisions by June 23, 2006.. The Committee will award travel support on the basis of:

• Will the applicant make a commitment to continue working on their approach after the workshop and to submit an abstract for possible presentation at the Second International Barcode Conference planned for February 2007?
• What research problem did the applicant select? The Committee will want to support applicants interested in a variety of topics.
• What approach did the applicant propose? The Committee will seek innovative approaches, especially those that integrate biological and mathematical perspectives (e.g., population genetics, taxonomy, statistics, computer science).
• Will the recipient's involvement enrich the barcoding community? DAWG and the Consortium for the Barcode of Life seek to increase the diversity of people involved in the Barcode Initiative by involving men and women from different countries and diverse fields of science and mathematics.
