I do have access to some funding through Gettysburg College and indeed hoped to offset any additional costs through means of outside grants. (I did notice tickets to South Africa are quite pricey!) I am a new PhD (2006) with a background in applied dynamical systems. Although my dissertation focuses on genetic algorithms (modeled by a discrete dynamical system), I am very interested in mathematical epidemiology (and do have limited course work in this area). I have a strong interest in pursuing research in mathematical epidemiology and have independently started to pursue this without formal training, focusing largely on spread of influenza (in particular avian influenza). Recently, however, I have become more interested in studying transmission models of HIV as a colleague, Eileen Stilllwaggon at Gettysburg College, is heavily involved in research in this area. Eileen has posed important questions regarding these models -- particularly regarding cost-effectiveness in treatment strategies (de-worming, malaria treatment, etc). It would be helpful for me to strengthen my background to tackle some of these fascinating questions. Because my formal training is in other areas of mathematics, the institute and workshop are of special interest to me. A more guided study in mathematical epidemiology would be of great benefit to me in approaching the research on transmission models of HIV. That will be up to the committee that reviews all the applications. I suggest you submit your application, which can be done on line. Please see the website. If you would be accepted to the Institute, your invitation to the follow up workshop is automatic. Otherwise, the problem is that we have very limited funding for the workshop. I would suggest that you send me your cv and a short paragraph of why you want to attend. I will discuss it with the other organizers to see if you could perhaps attend with your own funding. If yes, and you don't already have your own funding, you would have some time to apply for grants. AWM has travel grants for women, for example. I hope this helps.
