DESCRIPTION OF ACTIVITY: Give students a feel for just how rapid exponential growth is. At higher levels, students can generate & plot exponential functions. Have students write down their pet peeve chore, and a sum of money they'd agree to do the chore for. Tell them to offer their parents the following deal: $.01 for first day, $.02 the 2nd , $.04 the third, $.08 the fourth,etc. Is it a good deal? How much will they have after a week? a month? At higher levels students can derive 4 = 2^x, plot & compare with other exponential functions? How does exponential growth compare the power growth y = x^2? Y = x^5?
