Plenary Session:

The National Museum of Mathematics

Glen Whitney, Executive Director, National Museum of Mathematics, New York City

The National Museum of Mathematics (momath.org), which opened in December 2012 in New York City, is the only museum dedicated to mathematics in North America, and features over thirty interactive exhibits.  The mission of the museum is to "enhance public understanding and perception of mathematics."  According to its website, "Its dynamic exhibits and programs will stimulate inquiry, spark curiosity, and reveal the wonders of mathematics. The museum’s activities will lead a broad and diverse audience to understand the evolving, creative, human, and aesthetic nature of mathematics." The speaker will describe the museum and the opportunities it provides for students and teachers.

Glen Whitney earned an undergraduate math degree from Harvard University and a Ph.D. in mathematical logic from UCLA. He taught math at the University of Michigan, then joined Renaissance Technologies as a hedge-fund quantitative analyst. He left that position to devote himself to opening the National Museum of Mathematics.
