2 weeks - Summer 2001
Activities:
During the first 2 weeks of the summer of 2000, teachers will participate in a Graph Theory course emphasizing applications. There will also be workshops for researchers and all-institute activities, focused on issues of interest to both teachers and researchers. All participants will work with software relevant to discrete mathematics. Teachers will be introduced to the process of Mathematical research through a "First Research Experience".
During the second 2 weeks of the summer of 2000, teams of teachers and mentors will collaborate on research projects and develop classroom materials. These activities will continue for two weeks during the summer of 2001.
During the 2000-2001 academic year, there will be classroom visits by mentors and/or participants. Each participant and student(s) will report on classroom activities at a conference in spring 2001.
The Education Program will be led by experienced college and university faculty and high school lead teachers-in-residence.
Participants who successfully complete DCI activities will be awarded six graduate credits in mathematics education from Rutgers University.

Weekly Schedule:Long weekends are built into the program. The DCI week begins each week on Mondays at 1:00 pm, Eastern Standard Time. The remaining program week begins at 8:30 am and ends at 5:00 pm, with the exception of Fridays, which end at 4:00 pm to allow for travel before rush hour. Monday and Thursday evenings have scheduled programs or time for "homework" problems, research and mixing with researchers and other participants.
Housing and Support:
Lodging and meals (weekdays) will be provided during the 6 weeks of the two summers. Stipends of $1,200 (for the first summer program) and $600 (for the second summer program) will be paid to participants.
Travel Support:
Limited travel support scholarships can be applied for on the DCI Program application.
Late applications will be accepted until all positions are filled.
Who Should Apply?
The program is intended primarily for teachers or supervisors of mathematics or computer science in grades 9-12 within a reasonable commuting distance (150 miles) of Rutgers University. However, teachers who are outside the reasonable commuting distance are also encouranged to apply for DCI. Teams of teachers from a single school or district are encouraged.
