Visualization focuses on creating insightful visual representations of complex data. In the context of data mining, visualization provides another tool for creating abstraction, and discerning patterns and structure in seemingly undifferentiated data, allowing human perception to aggregate and analyze the data. By its nature, a visual approach can provide a visceral factor which can be compelling as well as merely aesthetic. In certain domains, such as biotechnology, where some data has a physical existence, visualization can provide a connection between this data and related abstract data, and the areas of information and scientific visualization overlap. The increasing analysis of hybrid data, along with the growing size of data sets, will require imaginative new models and techniques for visualization.

Scope and Format:

This workshop aims to bring together people from the different research communities interested in the interplay of visualization and data mining and exploration, including people in scientific and information visualization, databases, information retrieval, and application areas. The goal is to help establish relationships which can be used to strengthen and foster collaboration across the different areas. The hope is to identify key research issues that need to be addressed, especially those related to visualization of large graphs and non-traditional graph models. The workshop will address core algorithmic issues as well as aspects of modeling and the use of graphs in data exploration.
