Distributed Control Algorithms for WDM Optical Networks

Ezhan Karasan, AT&T Labs-Research

This talk discusses distributed control protocols for WDM optical mesh networks. These protocols are provided for setting up connections and for restoring service after network failures. The effect of wavelength converters on reducing the connection blocking probability will be discussed for centralized and distributed wavelength assignment and routing algorithms. Optical layer restoration algorithms with different degrees of control, such as centralized, distributed, and quasi-centralized, are presented and their virtues are compared.
